What is Therapy vs Coaching?

Therapist vs. Coach: A Snapshot of Understanding the different Roles

When it comes to personal growth and support, therapists and coaches both play important roles, but they go about it in different ways. Here’s a brief and straightforward look at how they differ.

Therapist

Therapists are licensed professionals trained to help people deal with issues from a biopsychosocial lens, with emotional struggles, and psychological challenges. They use evidence-based methods to assist individuals in understanding and resolving their problems. They may use an integrative approach and utilize all of their education, experience (s), and training as a base to their personal style when working with and helping clients.

Some Key Features of Therapy

  • Clinical Training: Therapists have extensive education, often holding advanced degrees, advanced trainings, and a license to practice.

  • Focus on Mental Health and Growth: Their main goal is to address psychological and emotional difficulties that are interfering in a person's life.

  • Process: Therapy usually sets a container for one's deeper understanding of them self and can work on underlying ways of thinking, feeling, doing, and being.

  • The Relationship: A good rapport and strong, trusting, and collaborative bond is a hallmark of the therapy container. It is a non-judgmental, understanding, and accepting environment where the therapist is genuine and sincere.

Coach

Coaches help people set and reach personal or professional goals. Their approach is more action-oriented, focusing on the present and future rather than delving deeply into past experiences.

Some Key Features of Coaching

  • Goal-Oriented: Coaches assist clients in identifying and achieving specific objectives.

  • Shorter-Term Engagement: Coaching relationships are often shorter and focused on immediate action.

  • Less Emphasis on Mental Health: Coaches may not tackle psychological issues unless they have additional training in therapy.
